Move a domain into our name

Bring a domain you already own from another registrar. Once it arrives, the registry record names our company instead of you.

Quick answer

How do I move a domain into your name?

To move a domain into our name, unlock it at your current registrar and copy its transfer (auth) code. Then start the transfer from your NomineeName account. As of October 2026, a .com transfer costs $12.99. ICANN blocks transfers for 60 days after a registration or a previous transfer. On arrival, the registrant becomes DomaineGoat LLC.

Can my domain be moved into your name?

Yes, if three conditions are met. Check them before you pay:

  1. We sell the extension. We hold 129 extensions in our name. A few registries refuse a foreign company as holder, so we cannot take .us, .eu, .fr, .it, .ca or ID-checked country codes.
  2. The 60-day window has passed. ICANN's Transfer Policy blocks a move to another registrar for 60 days after a new registration or a previous transfer. Many country codes have similar rules.
  3. The domain is active. An expired domain, or one in a dispute, cannot move until that is resolved.

Check the creation date and the status codes first. Our registrant lookup guide shows where to find them.

How to transfer a domain into our name, step by step

  1. Check the date and status

Look the domain up on lookup.icann.org. Make sure it is older than 60 days, not expiring within days, and not under a hold.

  2. Keep your DNS working

Note your nameservers and DNS records. If your DNS is hosted by the old registrar, move it to a DNS host you control first, so the site stays online.

  3. Unlock the domain

At your current registrar, turn off the transfer lock. In a lookup, the clientTransferProhibited status disappears.

  4. Get the transfer code

Ask the old registrar for the auth code, also called EPP code. Keep it private: it works like a key to the domain.

  5. Top up your balance

Top up in crypto, at least $25. Send the exact amount on the exact network: it is matched by its exact amount and credited once the network confirms it.

  6. Start the transfer

In your account, choose Transfer, enter the domain and the code, and confirm. The transfer price is taken from your balance.

  7. Approve and wait

The old registrar may email you to approve or reject. If it does nothing, ICANN rules let the transfer complete after five days.

What changes in the registrant record after the transfer?

The holder changes from you to our company. Everything technical stays as you set it.

Some country codes may change the holder through their own registry procedure, separate from the transfer itself. Your old data may stay in the archives of the old registrar and registry, under their own rules. A transfer cannot erase history; it changes the record from now on.

How much does a transfer cost?

The transfer price of the extension, with nominee registration included. For most generic extensions, such as .com and .org, the transfer adds one year: a .com costs $12.99 and a .org $12.99. A .ai transfer is billed 2 years: $88.99 plus one renewal, $177.98, and the registry adds 2 years. For other extensions, such as .de, .uk, .ch, .nl, .io, .co and .me, whether a year is added depends on the registry: a .de transfer costs $10.99 and a .uk $8.99, charged once. The checkout shows which case applies before you pay.

There is no fee to leave later: the transfer code is free, from your account, at any time. The optional Domain protection adds +$29/year per domain. All prices are on the pricing page.

What can delay or block a transfer?

Most delays come from the old registrar or from a rule of the extension:

  • The 60-day lock: after a registration or a transfer, wait until it ends.
  • A wrong or expired code: some registrars issue codes that expire. Ask for a new one.
  • A lock still on: the clientTransferProhibited status blocks the move.
  • An expiring domain: renew it first if it expires within days, so it does not lapse mid-transfer.
  • A dispute: a domain under a UDRP case is locked until the case ends.
  • An old privacy service: some registrars require you to switch off their privacy service before a transfer.

If a transfer fails, the domain stays at the old registrar and keeps working. Fix the cause, then start again.

Frequently asked questions

Will my website go down during the transfer?

Not if your DNS is hosted outside the old registrar. The nameservers move with the domain, unchanged. If the old registrar hosts your DNS, copy the records to a DNS host you control. Switch nameservers a day or two before you start.

Why can't I transfer a domain I registered last month?

ICANN's Transfer Policy blocks a transfer to another registrar for 60 days after a registration or a previous transfer. The rule protects against hijacking. Wait until the 60 days have passed, then start the transfer.

Do I lose the time already paid at my old registrar?

No. For generic extensions, the transfer usually adds one year on top of the current expiry date. A domain that expires in eight months will expire in one year and eight months after the transfer.

Does the old registrar learn that I moved to NomineeName?

It sees that the domain moved to our partner registrar. It does not see your NomineeName account, and the new registry record names our company. Your past data may stay in the old registrar's archives under its own rules.

Can I move a .de or .uk into your name?

Yes. Both registries accept our company as holder. After the move, DENIC or Nominet holds our company's name and address, not yours. See .de and .uk.

Can I move the domain out again later?

Yes. The transfer code is free, from your account, at any time, with no exit fee. You can also ask for the domain in your own name free, on request to support from your verified email address. See take your domain back in your name.
